About Tignall, GA - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Situated in North Wilkes County, Georgia, Tignall is a small rural community with an estimated population of more than 700 residents. It is currently one of the only three incorporated municipalities in the Wilkes County, with the other two being the city of Washington - also the county seat - and the town of Rayle.
While Tignall wasn’t recognized as a municipality until 1907, its history as a community goes back much further than that. Local churches began to organize as early as 1783, and in the following years many new congregations formed throughout the area like Independence United Methodist Church, which still exists in Tignall as of today.
The town was the birthplace of nine-term Georgia Secretary of State, and State Senator and Congressman, Benjamin Wynn Fortson, Jr. He got paralyzed in an accident as a young man and was wheel-chair bound for his entire political career. James E. Boyd, an educator and scientist, was also born in Tignall.
Today, Tignall is the center of North Wilkes County. Surrounded by vast woods, farms and rolling pastures, the town was officially incorporated in 1907. At that time, the installation of electric lights was one of the first orders of business for the newly established town. In the next two decades, Tignall grew into a thriving town featuring a hotel and many stores.
Nicknamed as ‘Little Atlanta’, the town of Tignall is relatively quiet due to its low population density. So, if you are looking for a serene place to live where traffic is minimal, you will probably enjoy your stay in Tignall. For recreation, visit Broad River Park which boasts fish cleaning stations, campsites, electrical hook-ups, a boat ramp, all on the shore of Clarks Hill Lake.
Broad River Campground, on the other hand, lies 20 miles southeast of the city of Elberton and offers space for tent and RV camping. As far as education is concerned, the town is served by six elementary schools, 4 middles schools and 2 high schools. Other schools serving the Tignall area include John De La Howe School and Calhoun Falls Charter School.
Tignall receives 46 inches of rainfall and 0 inches of snowfall per year. With the average high in the summers around 90 degrees, it’s crucial to have an air conditioning system in place to lower the temperature in your home. Furthermore, as the mercury drops as low as 32 in the winters, you should consider investing in a heat pump to maintain comfort.
