About Harlem, GA - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
Situated in southern Columbia County, Georgia, Harlem is a city with an estimated population of more than 2,700 residents. Part of the GA-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area, Harlem features a friendly hometown feel, a historic district with locally owned restaurants and shops, as well as quiet and safe neighborhoods. It’s the birthplace of comic actor Oliver Hardy.
Founded in 1870, the town was named after Harlem in New York City. Blessed with good drinking water and lined with big oak trees, Harlem was a haven for many Augusta residents. By 1913, the town had around 500 residents and was booming with a fertilizer/oil plant, a cotton warehouse, two clothing stores, two drug stores, two grocery stores, two gin mills, three hardware stores and three meat markets.
While the community of Berzelia merged with Harlem in 1933, the town remained family-oriented and small. The Georgia Railroad Deport, established back in 1896, brought hundreds of passengers to the town, but was demolished around 1965. Furthermore, the latest movies were screened at the Columbia Theater from 1949 to 1963.
As of today, the city of Harlem has a population of close to 3,000 residents and is famous for the annual Harlem Oliver Hardy Festival. The event is held on Main Street on the first Saturday of each October, drawing thousands of people to visit Harlem’s downtown area and celebrate the life of the comedian who was born in the town in 1892.
The city housing stock boasts a mixture of old and new, giving homebuyers plenty to choose from. With a multitude of dining and shopping options, concerts featuring world-class entertainers and several parks, rest assured there is plenty to do in Harlem. Just a short drive from the town is Clarks Hills Lake that provides boating and fishing opportunities.
As far as education is concerned, the city of Harlem is served by the exceptional public school system in Columbia County. However, students residing in the limits of the city usually attend Harlem High School, North Harlem Elementary School as well as Harlem Middle School.
Harlem receives 46 inches of rainfall and 0 inches of snowfall per year. With the average high in the summers around 92 degrees, having a reliable air condition system is crucial to lower the temperature in your home. Moreover, since the mercury drops as low as 38 degrees in the winters, you will need a heat pump to make your home warmer.
