Situated in southern Columbia County, Georgia, the city of Grovetown has an estimated population of more than 12,400 residents. Lying 15 miles east from downtown Augusta, Grovetown is a part of the Central Savannah River Area and GA-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. It’s the largest city and one of only two incorporated cities in the county.
Officially incorporated in 1881, the village was named after the old Grove Baptist Church, which was founded back in 1808. Paul Hamilton Hayne, a famous poet of the post-Civil War era, moved to Copse Hill during the 1860s and established the Grovetown post office. In 1877, the first U.S. mail service was inaugurated with Charles Clifford serving as the postmaster.
The first train station was built in 1879-89 and brought many influential and wealthy Augusta residents to Grovetown. The second station was completed in 1891 and served the citizens until 1970. It was later demolished in 1973. Grovetown experienced rapid growth with the construction of Camp Gordon by 1942. It was no longer a small, quiet agricultural town and many families looked for housing in Grovetown.
As of today, multi-housing construction and annexation has increased the population of the town. A variety of churches, stores, schools and dining establishments add to Grovetown’s culture. Services offered to residents include, a museum, a senior care center, a public safety department, two fire stations, sewer and water as well as recreational facilities.
The park system in the city is managed by the City of Grovetown Parks and Recreation Department, which provides residents with enjoyable leisure and recreational opportunities. Some facilities include ball fields at the Goodale Park and Liberty Park. Furthermore, children and adults can find quality library services at the Columbia Creek Library to meet their educational, recreational and informational reading needs.
A number of public schools serve students in the city of Grovetown, including Euchee Creek Elementary School, Grovetown High School, Cedar Ridge Elementary School, Grovetown Middle School, Brookwood Middle School, Columbia Middle School, Baker Place Elementary School as well as Grovetown Elementary School.
