Situated in the east central section of Georgia, Augusta is a city with an estimated population of more than 580,300 residents. The main city of the Augusta-Richmond County metropolitan area, Augusta is the 2nd largest metro area and 3rd largest city in the state of Georgia. It’s renowned for hosting The US Masters every spring.
The city’s history dates back as far as the early 18th century. James Oglethorpe, a British General, established the settlement in 1736, and named it to honor the bride of the Prince of Wales, Fredrick Louis. Built in the area now known as Summerville, many neighboring tribes of Cherokee and Creek Indians also called Augusta home.
A critical site during the Civil and Revolutionary Wars, Augusta also houses the Confederate Powderworks, the only permanent structure to be built by the Confederate States of America. In 1847, the completion of the Augusta Canal made the city the 2nd largest inland cotton market around the world during the cotton boom period.
As of today, Augusta is the center for military, medicine, cyber security, biotechnology and manufacturing. Some renowned companies that have their distribution centers or headquarters in the city include, Kellogg’s, T-Mobile, Club Car, John Deere, Automatic Data Processing, among various others.
Augusta host tournaments for golf, disc golf and drag boat racing, and has several parks that offer recreation facilities to the residents of the city. Some popular parks include Patriots Park, Diamond Lakes Regional Park, Pendleton Park, Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, Riverwalk Augusta and Brookfield Park.
As far as education is concerned, Richmond County School System manages the public schools in the city. The vast school system encompasses nine high schools, 10 middle schools and 36 elementary schools. Augusta also houses the main campuses of Paine College, Augusta Technical College and Augusta University. The satellite campuses of Georgia Military College and East Georgia State College are also located in the city.
